Enable IE Mode on Windows 10 and 11

Enable IE mode on Microsoft Edge

There are multiple ways to enable IE, follow anyone of the menthods to enable IE.

Method 1

To enable the IE mode, follow the below steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.
  2. Click Settings and More (ellipsis) button on the top-right corner.
  3. Select the Settings option.
  4. Click Default browser.
  5. Under the Internet Explorer compatibility section, turn on the Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode toggle switch.
  6. Click the Restart button.

Method 2

If you are on a device managed by your organization you will NOT see the option to Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer under edge://settings/defaultbrowser to allow Internet Explorer mode through the More tools menu.

Follow the below steps for configuring IE mode policies:

  1. Install the latest version of Microsoft Edge.
  2. Enterprise Mode Site List Manger -SiteList.
    • Download the Enterprise Mode Site List Manger v2 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49974
    • Create a SiteList xml as below:
    • Open the Enterprise Mode Site List Manger, click Add and type the rm url (ex: fsgbu-mum-603.snbomprshared1.gbucdsint02bom.oraclevcn.com/rm)
    • Under Compat Mode select IE7 Document Mode.
    • Under Open in select IE11 - >Save
    • Click File -> Save to XML to save the file as SiteList.xml on your PC(ex: C:\SiteList.xml)
  3. Edge group policy template
    • Download the Edge Chromium group policy template files from https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/de-de/enterprise
    • For adml, open the .zip file and go to policy_templates -> windows -> admx ->en-US
    • Copy all the *.adml files to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\en-US
    • For admx, go to policy_templates > windows > admx>
    • Copy msedge.admx to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\
  4. Group Policy Editor
    • Open the Local Group Policy Editor [from run gpedit.msc ]
    • Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates ->Microsoft Edge
    • Microsoft Edge -> Configure Internet Explorer integration -> Edit.
    • Change to Enabled and select ‘Internet Explorer Mode’ -> Apply.
    • Microsoft Edge -> Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List -> Edit.
    • Change to Enabled and set the path to the SiteList.xml path (File saved in Step #2, last point C:\SiteList.xml) .
  5. Apply the above changes:
    • Go to browser, edge://policy/
    • Reload Policies
  6. Open the Edge browser, and navigate to the above added url (ex: fsgbu-mum-603.snbomprshared1.gbucdsint02bom.oraclevcn.com/rm).
  7. Try restarting the machine once to apply the changes if step 6 is not working.
